My Story

From Surviving to Thriving

My name is Sharon Wallace, and I am a cancer fighter, survivor, mother, and believer in the power of hope.

My journey began long before I ever heard the word cancer. Growing up in a large family in what was once a small town, I carried burdens no child should have to bear. I survived rape, struggled with self-hatred, and lived with a constant feeling that I didn’t belong. At one point, the pain became so overwhelming that I attempted to end my own life. By God’s mercy and grace, I survived. Looking back, I honestly never thought I would live past the age of twenty.

Life, however, had other plans.

As the years passed, healing slowly began to replace hopelessness. By the time I turned fifty, I believed I had finally overcome the darkest chapters of my life. I was blessed with four incredible children, a fulfilling career, and a close circle of family and friends who enriched my life. For the first time, I truly felt like I had found my place in the world.

Then, in 2019, life took another unexpected turn.

After months of ignoring what I knew wasn’t normal, yes, I waited three or four months because I’ve never been a fan of going to the doctor, I finally scheduled an appointment with my gynecologist. My menstrual cycle had returned long after it should have ended, and I knew something wasn’t right.

A biopsy confirmed I had endometrial (uterine) cancer.

My doctor referred me to an exceptional gynecologic oncologist who recommended a complete hysterectomy. At fifty, I was perfectly fine with that plan. I already had the exact number of children I wanted—in exactly the order I wanted them—and I was ready to move forward. Following surgery, we were hopeful that every trace of cancer had been removed. I felt as though I had been given a second chance. A pardon from years of mistakes, fear, and uncertainty.

For a while, life felt normal again.

Then, in 2021, I began noticing that my abdomen was growing larger and larger. People joked that it was probably gas. I wish they had been right. After trying every over-the-counter remedy I could find with no relief, the pain became unbearable. One night, I went to the emergency room.

The diagnosis was devastating.

Doctors discovered severe ascites, a buildup of fluid in my abdomen, revealing that my cancer had returned.

No one wants to hear those words a second time.

Yet cancer has taught me something I never expected: strength isn’t found in pretending you’re never afraid. Courage is choosing to keep going anyway. Every appointment, every treatment, every setback, and every victory has reminded me that resilience isn’t about having an easy life—it’s about refusing to surrender when life becomes difficult.

Today, I continue this journey with faith, hope, determination, and more than a little humor. Cancer may be part of my story, but it will never be the author of my life. I still believe in tomorrow. I still believe in purpose. And I still believe that every day is another opportunity to encourage someone else.
